There are different regulations for supervision based on the setting for the supervision, the license type of the associate, and the dates the supervision occurred. We’ll provide context on these regulations, along with answers to frequently asked questions.
In this guide, we’ll cover:
Working in a private practice setting
BBS LPCC
These associates may only work in a private practice setting under their first associate registration number. If an individual applies for and receives a second or subsequent associate registration, they cannot work in a private practice setting.
BBS MFT
These associates cannot work in a private practice setting with a second associate registration number. If an individual applies for and receives a second MFT associate registration, they cannot work in a private practice setting with that second associate registration number.
Receiving supervision via phone or videoconferencing
Whether or not you’re able to receive supervision via phone or videoconferencing depends on your license type:
BBS ASW
Neither individual nor group supervision may be provided over the phone. However, an ASW working for a government entity (school, college, or institution) that is both nonprofit and charitable may obtain supervision via live two-way videoconferencing.
BBS LPCC
Supervision may not be received over the phone. However, a PCC associate working for a government entity (school, college, university) or an institution that is both nonprofit and charitable may obtain supervision via live two-way videoconferencing.
BBS MFT
An MFT associate working for a governmental entity (school, college, university) or institution that is both nonprofit and charitable may obtain supervision via live two-way videoconferencing. The supervisor is responsible for ensuring that client confidentiality is preserved.

Does my supervisor need to be employed by my site and be onsite? (BBS ASW)
You may receive supervision from a supervisor not employed by your site as long as you have a signed agreement between the employer and supervisor.
Whether your supervisor must be onsite depends on the situation. If you have questions you should contact the BBS or CAMFT.
Does my supervisor need to be on-site? (BBS LPCC and MFT)
BBS LPCC
In a private practice setting the supervisor must be employed by and practice at, the same site as the applicant’s employer.
In any setting that is not a private practice, the supervisor may be employed by the registrant’s employer on either a paid or voluntary basis. An off-site supervisor must sign a letter of agreement with the agency employing the applicant.
BBS MFT
Per the BBS:
Only in a private practice setting does a supervisor need to be employed by, and practice at, the same site as the applicant’s employer. In a setting that is not a private practice, the supervisor may be employed by the registrant’s employer on either a paid or voluntary basis. An off-site supervisor must sign a letter of agreement with the agency employing the applicant. Statutes and Regulations cited: CCR Section 1833
Do I need to log supervision in order to claim workshop hours? (BBS MFT)
As of 9/29/2012 MFT trainees and associates are no longer required to receive direct supervision for professional enrichment activities, such as workshops, seminars, training sessions, and conferences. This means that from 9/29/2012 forward you can claim workshop hours in a week without logging any supervision.
Note: If you log workshop hours prior to September 29, 2012 without logging 1 unit of supervision, you'll receive an alert and the hours will be subtracted from your valid total. Workshop hours logged from 9/29/2012 forward will count as valid with or without supervision being logged.
The change is the result of the recent passage of SB 1575 which amended Section 4980.43 of the Business and Professions Code. Prior to the passage of SB 1575, MFT trainees and associates were expected to receive supervision (at least an hour or two hours of group supervision) in the same week that workshop, seminar, training, and conference hours were obtained. Although direct supervision is no longer required for professional enrichment activity hours of experience, keep in mind that trainees and associates must still have their supervisors approve the workshops, seminars, trainings, and conferences they attend. Also, the BBS accepts workshop, seminar, training and conference hours that are acquired through online courses, provided that the courses meet all other requirements.
